Utah State University (aka USU) is a land grant university established in 1888. The Morrill Land Grant act of 1861 sought to create a university in every state funded by proceeds from Federal Lands.

In its formative years, USU focused primarily on agriculture with disputes with the University of Utah erupting whenever USU attempted to expand its offerings.

In the latter part of the 20th century, USU expanded both its cultural and scientific offerings to help develop the reputation of a full fledged university.

As an agricultural university, USU developed a system of extensions throughout.
