Deseret Books
Deseret Books is a publishing house and chain of book stores owned by Deseret Management Corporation--a for-profit corporation owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
According to Wikipedia, the company was created in 1919 with the merging of Deseret News Bookstore and the Deseret Sunday School Union Bookstore. Both stores trace their history into the 1860s and the publisher George Q. Cannon & Sons.
The company publishes and sells LDS media. The selection began with primers and Bibles and has gradually expanding to include Mormon fiction, music and movies.
Acquisitions through the years include Seagull Books, Bookcraft, LDS Living, Excel Entertainment Group and Shadow Mountain Records.
Additional media owned by the LDS Church include KSL, The Deseret News, KBYU, KBYUTV and The Salt Lake Tribune.
Corporate History
- George Q. Cannon (1827 – 1901) was a Mormon pioneer. He was a printer, editor and publisher for the Deseret News. He published several tomes and owned the Deseret News Book Company which he donated to the Church.
- 1919: Deseret Books was created with the combination of Deseret News Bookstore and the Deseret Sunday School Union Bookstore.
- The store was organized as a for-profit entity called Utah Company.
- The company expanded into films in 1940. They created
in 1947, which later dissolved. - 1959: Deseret Books opened its second branch in Ogden. Additional stores soon followed.
- 1999: Deseret Books acquired a publisher called Bookcraft Inc. Bookcraft.com url forwards to deseretbooks.com
- 2004: Deseret Books acquired Excel Entertainment Group.
- 2006: Deseret Books acquired Seagull Books which offers discounted LDS Books.
